What precautions should I take to avoid breakdowns or any liability?
Van Service
Owners are required to have a roadworthy vehicle at all times so make sure your van has been fully serviced prior to your first hire of the season. Depending on how popular your van is, you may need to get it serviced more than once each season. Ideally, vans should be serviced every 10,000 miles and at least every 12 months. This will reduce the chances of breakdowns and accidents.
Gas Safety
If you are renting out your van (for drive or static hire), our gas appliances must undergo safety checks by a Gas Safe registered engineer at least once every 12 months. The gas safety records must be displayed in your RV. If your RV contains a fixed combustion appliance it is legally required to have a carbon monoxide detector. In the event of a fault or problem, if the gas system is faulty and has not been checked or maintained, you will be found negligent and held liable for any damage or incident. You can find more information and a list of gas safety registered engineers here.
MOT
Check the due date on your next MOT and book it in. All vans must have an up-to-date MOT. All advisories on the MOT must be addressed and resolved prior to any rental. Failing to action them will void your insurance through Camplify and owners will be responsible for the claim.
Habitation Check
We strongly encourage you to have an up-to-date habitation check for your van. This is a detailed examination of your van and usually covers dangers such as fire risk, ventilation and gas systems as well as problem areas like damp, water systems, electrical systems and bodywork.
Your local caravan or motorhome dealer service centre may be able to carry out this work for you or you could search for a registered mobile servicer to carry out the test at your location.
We have also put together a general guide to help you prevent damage on your vehicle while it is on rental.
